The issue of the energy efficiency of the storage

Paris, may 30, 2017 – The data continues to grow at an incredible pace, and because of this, the space within data centers has become an important issue for companies, because it takes more and more capacity to store these data. But also more energy consumption and need for cooling. In fact, a data center facility of average size, in the United States, uses approximately 34,000 kW of electricity each year, which represents an energy bill of $ 180,000 per year. Companies are therefore constantly looking for new spaces to be physically stored their data. These costs generally exceed the budget of the IT department, and this is why the storage efficiency has become a major topic. All the more that the power of data centers is expected to increase up to 140 billion kilowatt-hours per year by 2020, the United States, which is equivalent to the annual output of 50 power plants. In France, the electricity consumption of data centers would have reached nearly 3 TWh in 2015, according to RTE, which exceeds the annual electricity consumption of the city of Lyon. Far from being merely a phenomenon of the western world, this issue affects all countries, even the developing ones.

In addition, the process of cooling of the storage network plays a major role in energy costs. The higher the rate of operation of the bays increases, the more they heat up and need to be cooled in order to maintain the proper functioning of all components. If an error should occur due to overheating, this could disrupt the operation of the entire storage infrastructure and compromise the durability of the data. In order to reduce the energy consumption of data centers, the berries should therefore be more efficient.

To achieve this, INFINIDAT offers three tips for businesses to improve the energy efficiency of the storage of their data.
Use less energy through consolidation of storage arrays
A provisioning intelligent combined with a data layout streamlined, can help reduce peak demand and therefore the overheating of the berries. Thus each media (NL-SAS, SAS, SSD, RAM) will be ready to provide the data more quickly and efficiently. A provision of sequential data, you can organize data more intelligently, and position them to the SSD or DRAM for reading, rather than always go on the rotating discs, thus reducing the energy consumption.
Maximize the density of the bay
Few know it, but the deleted files on a bay to see their content replaced, literally, by zeros. Only if there are deleted files, this means that the volume of these data is “dead” is going to increase and thus slow down the efficiency of the system. Today, there are on the market a few berries which have the ability, to automatically remove the zeros that are part of the data which allows to increase the density of the bay and to store more data in a smaller space. Most of the berries can go back in a second time and delete the zeros of the data already stored, but this will require a surplus of energy to accomplish this task.
Minimize the space used
While most of the systems apply the same type of compression, the installation of a platform-intelligent compression may be beneficial. This platform can identify the different types of data and select from a library of compression algorithms to the system, which will compress the better the data. This offers a higher compression ratio allowing users to store more data in a bay already dense.

It is the combination of these technologies that will help the system storage to operate much more efficiently, while reducing the power and energy used. In addition, these technologies allow the bay to be more efficient, without accumulating a lot of heat, lowering its cooling needs.
