Created by the legislature in 2003, the Autorité des Marchés Financiers is an independent public authority that oversees the market participants and the products of france’s financial in order to ensure the protection of investors, the investor information and the smooth functioning of financial markets. The AMF also contributes to the supervision and regulation of these markets to the european and international levels.

To ensure this mission, this authority lays down rules for the application of the law and is endowed with powers of authorization, mediation, monitoring, investigation and sanction.

The AMF has nearly 470 employees, from trades, finance, sales and law.

The mandate of its current president, Gérard Rameix, matures August 1, 2017. Under article L. 621-2 of the French monetary and financial code, the chairman of the AMF is appointed by decree of the president of the Republic for a term of five years, non renewable. In accordance with article 13 of the Constitution, the standing committees of the two assemblies must first be consulted.

At the request of the president of the Republic, in order to aid in the recruitment of the new Chairman of the Autorité des Marchés Financiers, Bruno Le Maire, minister of Economy, asked a panel of qualified persons for the purposes of proposing an assessment of the skills and experience of the candidates. This panel will be chaired by Jacques de Larosière, honorary governor of the Banque de France and former director-general of the International Monetary Fund. Will members France Drummond, David Wright and Paul-Henri de la Porte du Theil. The directorate general of the Treasury will provide the secretariat.
