In September 2013, in order to restore the competitiveness of the site, the Group presented an adaptation plan and decided to invest nearly 200 million euros to modernise and build production units for manufacturing value-added. The platform in Carling – Saint-Avold has become an industrial leader in polymer in Europe.
“Thanks to the investment and work carried out, the project of a future for the platform in Carling, presented in 2013 is now a reality,” said Patrick Pouyanné, ceo of Total. The platform is moved from a site producing amenities, highly rivaled, to a site with higher added value to meet market needs. In 2013, the Group had engaged in a plan to accommodate the ambitious site of Carling, and guaranteeing a future to each of the colleagues concerned. I would like to thank the teams, without which this evolution copy would not have taken place. Total has fulfilled its commitments and I am proud of it. ”
The adaptation of the platform’s petrochemical Carling Saint-Avold is made without dismissal, or forced mobility, and a custom solution has been found for each collaborator (internal mobility, retirement, support to business creation, etc).

Site leader of the polymers in Europe : increase of the production capacity of polystyrene to make the 1 site european Total ; modernization of production of polyethylene in order to provide plastics advanced (e.g. medical sector) ; construction of a unit for the production of polypropylene compound to meet the demand of the automotive market of plastic materials and innovative light that can replace steel and thereby reduce the fuel consumption of vehicles.
European Centre resins, hydrocarbon Total : head office and R&D center of Cray Valley in Europe, as well as of the supply chain ; the construction of a unit for the production of resins with high added value (-® and KRASOL®, the properties of adhesion, durability or braking) ; modernization of a unit for producing resins with a top of the range (CLEARTACK®, transparent and without smell).
In order to meet its commitments to its customers, Total has made investments in logistics to ensure a supply of ethylene and propylene, in spite of the steam cracker shutdown in October 2015.
In order to support its local stakeholders, the Group has signed four agreements with the State. Total Regional Development has provided support for business partners affected by the development of the site. And, under the impulse of the Total, with the other industrialists present on the platform, the association Chemesis has been created : its purpose is to improve the competitiveness of the actors present (mutualisation of services and utilities), and increase its appeal to attract new ones.
