The EU näringsministrar agreed on Monday on a new system for the type-approval of motor vehicles.
It explained Malta’s minister for the economy Christian Cardona at the meeting of the EU competitiveness council, where he sat in the chair.
The decision follows dieselgateskandalen. In 2015, revealed the U.S. environmental protection agency that Volkswagen has cheated systematically in the testing of nox emissions from diesel cars with the help of defeat devices.
”Reliable controls for cars will be introduced so that utsläppsfusk happened earlier can’t happen in the future,” said Christian Cardona.
The proposal does not change any technical requirements for cars or other emission requirements. However, criteria are introduced for the mandatory market surveillance.
The EUROPEAN commission will also get the opportunity to perform the sampling. And the authorities have the right to carry out unannounced inspections at the plants.
Sweden put itself behind the proposal.
The council of ministers can now start negotiations with the european Parliament on the final version of the law.
