In 2015, a 20 Minutes decided to create a new entity Data to exploit the information collected on its various sites and applications dissemination of content. Among the first projects related to the data, the Group hopes to test the personalized recommendation of items, according to the profile of the visitor. The goal is to preserve longer the player on the site by offering content which will be of interest and help to build loyalty.

“On a site like this for 20 Minutes, the visitors don’t identify themselves,” says Winoc Coppens, Director of Information Systems for 20 Minutes. “The tactics of customization must therefore be based on the cookies in order to collect the data of customer behaviour and infer the most relevant information to push during their next visit. “To exploit this volume of data, the Data Science is indispensable, but it requires technical profiles are very specific.

A Boot Camp Big Data that combines the agility, expertise and innovation

In 2016, a 20-Minute turns at Keyrus, who offered him to participate in his Boot Camp Data Science : this initiative is to provide businesses with innovative projects to work with future engineers, trained by Keyrus to the latest technologies in Data Science and supervised by experts, Keyrus throughout the mission.

“We immediately joined the project, because it allowed us to work with a young profile, close to our target, which gave us an outside look interesting, and this at a reasonable cost for this type of expertise in Data Science,” explains Winoc Coppens.

The steps for refining the Data

During the first stage of the project, the experts Keyrus highlight the need to improve the accuracy of the data, for that Data Science can be applied with relevance. “Thanks to the iterative cycles of the project, carried out with the method Scrum, we were able to quickly improve the quality of the data by adding the necessary tags to our sites and our applications “, explains Sebastian Kaczor, Data Analyst in charge of the entity Data of 20 Minutes.

At the end of this first phase, discussions are conducted to define the best rules to be applied during workshops, which involve in particular the Marketing team. Each proposal for content, an a/B Testing is active to assess the relevance of the recommendation.

Validate assumptions and gain new insights

In a few months, the project allowed 20 Minutes to make significant progress in its thinking on the valuation of its data. “We had assumptions that the exploitation of the data was able to confirm,” says Winoc Coppens. “On every project, we will now use the data to validate our choices and to bring new ideas. ”

The recommendation of content, 20 Minutes wishes to continue testing, mobile applications in particular, where the user is more engaged. This first experiment also opens up perspectives on the integration of the recommendation contained in other devices, such as the new version of the bot Messenger that 20 Minutes will launch soon.
