Mexico city has entrusted the Veolia construction and operation for 30 years of the first recovery Unit energy (UVE) of the waste in Latin America, in partnership with leading companies in the mexican and international. This facility will process 1.6 million tons of household waste per year, which is two times more than the largest French settlement, and the values of 965 GWh of electricity per year to power the Mexico city metro.

Mexico – waste-to-energy

The ten million inhabitants of Mexico city produces 13,000 tonnes of waste per day. Today, two-thirds of these wastes are sent into storage facilities. This new installation of energy recovery will change on a daily basis of green energy almost a third of household waste from the city.

“The waste are becoming valuable resources. Mexico promotes here the valorization of waste and production of renewable energy. We will contribute with this great project, to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of Mexico, of their essential services to the fight against climate change “, explained Gustavo Migues, director of the Latin America zone of Veolia.

The start of installation is planned in 2020. Now for the past 25 years in Mexico, Veolia serves 13 million people in the country and employs 3,000 people. The Group handles 2.3 million tonnes of waste per year and serves 800 000 inhabitants in the collection. With a drinking water production of 500 million m3, Veolia responds to the needs of the citizens of 20 mexican cities.
