Catalonia would have to leave the EU if a legal referendum was held which voted for independence.

It said the EUROPEAN commission’s chefstalesman Margaritis Schinas at a briefing on Monday.

He said that Sunday’s referendum was not legal under the Spanish constitution.

”For the commission is this an internal matter for Spain and must be handled within the framework of the Spanish constitution”, said Margaritis Schinas.

The commission urged the parties to move from confrontation to dialogue.

The european commission expects Spain’s prime minister Mariano Rajoy managing the process.

The commission does not have any role in resolving the conflict, said the chief negotiator.

The Catalan side have requested mediation from the EU, something that the central government in Madrid did not want.

Around the EU have different political leaders expressed concern over the situation. Among them are the British foreign secretary Boris Johnson, the Slovenian prime minister Miro Fying, Lithuania’s foreign minister Linas Linkevicius and the socialist and green groups in the european Parliament.
