The synthesis of PET is performed in two major steps :
The first, considered to be the most critical, is to achieve the synthesis of oligomers of PET, from monomers of terephthalic acid and mono ethylene glycol.
The second allows for the synthesis of PET by polycondensation of oligomers previously obtained.
In taking this first step successfully, CARBIOS demonstrates that it is now possible to use waste plastic PET rather than fossil resources for the synthesis of oligomers of PET.

CARBIOS had previously demonstrated the depolymerization selective PET bottles for the return to the monomers initial. A first ascent in the scale of the process of depolymerization enzymatic PET bottles has since been carried out. After a proof-of-concept on the scale of some hundred milliliters, this depolymerization was carried out in a reactor of 5 liters and 100 liters. At this final scale, 20 kg of PET were treated and depolymerized to over 90%. The performance of depolymerization of the process proved to be identical in all respects, regardless of the volume of the reactor used, demonstrating the robustness of the process. At the end of the depolymerization, the terephthalic acid product was recovered and purified. It has a purity of more than 99% and the techniques of analysis of reference do not allow to differentiate it from terephthalic acid, commercial product from oil.
Alain MARTY, Chief Scientific officer of CARBIOS says : “We have demonstrated that the purity of terephthalic acid obtained by our enzymatic process original allowed the efficient synthesis of oligomers of PET. This is a new important step which confirms the industrial potential of our technology. We are very confident in the demonstration next to a complete recycling of waste PET bottles into new PET bottles, quality equivalent to original products. It is now our short-term goal before conducting, with the actors of the value chain of the PET, the steering line and the demonstration of industrial process. ”
