“We are deeply relieved to Mathias Depardon and his loved ones, said Christophe Deloire. Her detention was completely unjustified, it is a month of lost without reason in the life of a man, not to mention the anguish and uncertainty which he has suffered. We would like to thank all those who mobilized, notably within the committee’s support. We also thank the French authorities, the Elysee and the ministry of foreign Affairs.”

Based in Turkey for five years, Mathias Depardon was arrested on may 8 to a report in the south-east of the country to the National Geographic magazine. For the past month, the organization has put all of his energy and his commitment to the release.

Turkey occupies the 155th place out of 180 in the Ranking of the 2017 of the press freedom established by RSF. While an unprecedented wave of repression is sweeping over the Turkish media, several dozen foreign journalists have been expelled in the past two years. More than one hundred Turkish journalists are still in jail.
